Where Baffles Work Best

  • Gyms and multipurpose rooms
  • Lobbies and atriums
  • Open offices with exposed ceilings
  • Cafeterias and restaurants
  • Auditoriums and worship spaces

Planning a Baffle Ceiling

Baffles hang below the structure, so they work where the deck and ductwork stay exposed. The spacing, depth and direction of the rows decide how much sound they absorb, and they are laid out around lights, sprinklers and air diffusers. Baffles come in fabric-wrapped fiberglass, felt, wood and metal finishes, so they can be a design feature as well as an acoustic fix.

Baffle Materials

  • Fabric-wrapped fiberglass: the most sound absorption per baffle
  • Felt and PET (recycled plastic): light, durable and available in many colors
  • Wood and metal: chosen for looks, usually perforated or backed for acoustics
  • Impact-resistant baffles for gyms and rooms where balls or equipment can hit the ceiling

FAQ

Baffle Ceilings FAQs

What are baffle ceilings and where do they work best?

Baffles are acoustic panels hung vertically from the structure above, in rows or patterns. Because both faces absorb sound, they cut echo in large, open rooms where a flat ceiling is not practical, such as gyms, lobbies, open offices, cafeterias, auditoriums and restaurants with exposed ceilings.
