Suspended Acoustic Ceilings

What Is a Suspended Acoustic Ceiling?

These ceilings feature tiles or panels suspended from a grid system, providing both sound absorption and easy access to utilities. Perfect for offices, commercial spaces, and schools, they offer flexibility and efficient noise control.

Where It Works Best

  • Offices and conference rooms
  • Schools and training rooms
  • Medical offices and clinics
  • Retail stores and restaurants
  • Corridors and common areas

Why Choose One

A suspended acoustic ceiling hangs a metal grid below the structure and fills it with sound-absorbing tiles. It hides ductwork, pipes and wiring while keeping them easy to reach, cuts noise and echo in the room, and makes repairs simple: a damaged tile lifts out and a new one drops in. Tiles come in a wide range of acoustic ratings, edge details and humidity ratings, so the same system works in a quiet office or a humid Gulf Coast building.

Planning the Ceiling Height

A suspended ceiling needs room above it for the grid, the hanger wires and whatever runs through the plenum, such as ductwork, pipes and cable. Most commercial ceilings hang several inches to a few feet below the structure. We confirm the finished height against doors, windows, lights and the equipment above, and we lay out the grid so border tiles are even on both sides of the room and fixtures line up in clean rows.

FAQ

Suspended Acoustic Ceilings FAQs

Is a drop ceiling the same as a suspended ceiling?

Yes. Drop ceiling and suspended ceiling mean the same thing: a metal grid hung below the structure with lay-in tiles or panels. An acoustic ceiling is a drop or suspended ceiling that uses sound-absorbing tiles. More on drop ceiling installation.

What do NRC and CAC mean on ceiling tiles?

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is how much sound a tile absorbs, on a scale from 0 to 1. A tile with an NRC of 0.70 absorbs about 70% of the sound that hits it. CAC (Ceiling Attenuation Class) is how well the ceiling blocks sound traveling between rooms through the space above. Open offices and classrooms usually need a high NRC, around 0.70 or more, while private offices and exam rooms also need a good CAC, often 35 or more. More on suspended acoustic ceilings.
